15 WebSeries that Changed the dynamics of Indian Viewership
While the majority of Bollywood and Television-based filmmakers and production houses are still trying to please the censor board and serve topics according to the conservative audience’s taste, web-series producers in India are experimenting with the free hand they’ve been afforded. Bidding adieu to the nonsensical tv series catering to the old school thought process, a number of web series have come up in the past few years and are providing video content that the youth can relate to.
All said and done, I’d call 2016 as the golden year for many budding Indian web-series and shockingly or surprisingly, close to 80% of the aforementioned web-series commenced then. So here goes, the non-exhaustive list of Indian web-series from good to the best, that could make you fall for Indian serial-like content all over again.
IMDB : 7.6
"Baked" is India's most ambitious original fiction web-series which chronicles the misadventures of three university flatmates who decide to start a midnight food delivery service. This genre-bending series takes you on a roller coaster ride as our odd ball trio juggle student life with business, and invariably manage to land themselves into trouble.
Baked was a break out series right after Permanent roommates season 1 released with a very edgy screenplay and with a very thorough art work making it look like exactly a bachelor pad. Baked majorly banks on relatability and it sure pays off.
• Permanent Roommates
IMDB : 8.7
the story of a couple who have been in a long distance relationship for the past three years and now when they finally meet, the prospect of marriage awaits them.
Why Permanant Roommates?
Cause its permanant roommates 'duh'...other than though permanant roommates is such huge force to reckon with cause it was the first break out series in youtube india and it in turn generated a whole generation of creators and audience. With two successful runs of seasons and a third one in the pipeline, ‘Permanent Roommates’ is perhaps commercially one of the most successful web-series India has ever produced. A rom-com that explores the pros and cons of a live-in relationship.
• Bang Baaja Baaraat
IMDB : 8.2
Two people from very different backgrounds fall in love and decide to get married, but not without their parents blessings. Three days before the wedding they introduce each other with their respective parents and all hell breaks lose.
Why Bang Baaja Baaraat ?
As the name suggests, so it happens. Belonging to the Rom-com genre, ‘BBB’ tries to explore humor among sex and relationships in an urbanized destination marriage-ly setup. While bold scenes and acts aren’t very difficult to find, performances are also surprisingly well-thought through, thanks to the YRF banner (Y-Films to be precise) and increasingly popular star cast (of the likes of Ali Fazal, Rajit Kapoor et al). Though the scenes or portrayals could be somewhat offensive to a few, ‘BBB’ is still a breath of fresh air and brings upon a tingling sensation in the rather bland world of Indian series.
• Bring On the Night
IMDB : 8.3
KD has a head exploding with ideas. But after his club shuts down, he has several choices but none that excite him. Until one night, when he happens to visit his friend's 2 century-old house that's been lying dormant for years.
Why Bring On the Night ?
Probably the least popular series on this list but majorly because it was released when youtube wasn't even a thing back in 2012. Produced by Mtv india . This series depicted perfectly the urban youth in the time it was set in ( BBM was a thing back then , yes that old) if you haven't watched then this one's my personal recommend .
• TVF Bachelors
IMDB : 9.1
The series revolves around Four Bachelor Flatmates who in every episode will deal with a specific daily life bachelor related problem. Its about their battle against an external X problem as a single team The Bachelors.
• Ladies Room
IMDB : 7.4
This is a story of two besties and the mental adventures they go through in six different loos. It is a show about modern young 'girl bros' struggling to grow up even as they grow old. These girls are mad, bad and completely unapologetic about it!
Why Ladies Room?
One thing about the otherwise average series ‘Ladies Room’ that I loved the most is its candidness on the feminine outlook in an extremely bold yet simpler way. A show on and about two women, Khanna and Dingo, and their errands and happenstances across six different loos (wink, wink!), we could expect everything but a family drama. From smoking pot to pregnancy tests and choked toilets, from a train to a nightclub, none of the loos are spared from those so-called “secretive” conversations and accidents. A straightforward and candid take on what happens inside the Ladies Room, it is as fearless as it progresses.
• TVF Tripling
IMDB : 8.7
Divorced, jobless, hopeless. Three siblings plan a road trip together. Chandan, Chanchal & Chitvan. Together they start a hilarious journey, to find themselves and their relations..
Why tripling ?
For the travel junkies, this is the series. Perhaps the only travel-related web-series in this list,The entire journey takes the trio across the desert and a stolen car later, they have come to terms to remember this as a journey of their lifetime. TVF Tripling is both funny and sexy, albeit in a travelogue and getting-to-know-your-life the tough way kind of a notion.
IMDB : 8.9
Breathe is an Indian drama that explores the lives of ordinary men faced with extraordinary circumstances. Kabir (Sadh), a brilliant but non-conventional officer of the Crime Branch, puts the pieces together of seemingly unconnected deaths that lead up to an unlikely suspect - the affable Danny (R.Madhavan). Kabir will not stop till he cracks the case and delivers justice..
Why Breathe ?
Though poorly written breathe is probably the first mainstream thriller webseries which makes it an exciting pick with power house performances and tipsy thrilling sequences this series is worth a binge.
• TVF Pitchers
IMDB : 9.3
A story of trials and tribulations of four young entrepreneurs who quit their day jobs in order to pursue their start up venture.
The only Indian series to be on IMDB' s top 50 all time series. Pitchers is perhaps mine and everybodies all time favourite and for various reasons. The zenith that TVF Pitchers reached back in its day was second to none. Connotations such as “Tu Beer Hai” and much more were both meme-worthy and catchy.
While the four of the leads are differently talented, mutual conflicts combined with initial failures during raising money for a startup leads to spats and more problems. Towards the end, all of them realize this is the way forward. As the next season of TVF Pitchers is awaited, TVF Pitchers has garnered a somewhat cult following for itself and has highly influenced the evolving startup culture.
• Little Things
Little Things is a web-series about the sweet little moments experienced by a young couple in their everyday life.
• laakhon Mein ek
IMDB : 8.6
akash is planning to study commerce in Raipur. His father has different plans for him. He sends Aakash to an IIT Coaching institute far away from Raipur. Aakash reaches there to discover it's a whole different world and he is a misfit.
Why Laakhon Mein Ek?
If not for anything then for its writing which is pure brilliant by the way. And the production value it projects you would certainly believe your in a coaching centre, and for the love of biswa.
• Bose Dead/Alive
IMDB : 9.4
The man. The legend. The mystery. He fascinated us in life, and long after his "death". This is the story of India's biggest cover-up: Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and the mystery of his alleged death.
• TVF Humoursly Yours
Follows the life of Vipul Goyal , a Stand Up comedian. As the tagline says "The drama behind the comedy"
Why Humoursly yours?
Because as it’s name suggests its humorous as F and it delivers in every emotion that it sets its foot on. Homoursly yours is one of the most wittiest sitcom in this list with a very craftful writing. Humorously Yours’ revolves around the life and times of a standup comedian Vipul Goyal, who thinks highly of himself and wants to go places, but is constantly struggling with his rapport in front of his wife, and his co-workers and everything is topped with an ensemble cameo performances of many stand-up comedians. This truly is a masterful, stunningly hilarious show with loads of punchlines, double entendres, great comebacks and outshining actors. Truly and humorously yours if you’re really into stand-up comedy.
• What the Folks
IMDB : 8.6
What The Folks' is a journey of how modern families are breaking stereotypes, overcoming generation gaps, and growing to love one another, despite having starkly different world views.
• Man's World
IMDB : 7.4
Kiran is fed up of the way society favors women over men. One day, he prays for men and women to trade places. As they say, be careful what you wish for!
Why Man’s World ?
. A hilarious take on women vs. men’s societal status and the way women experience subtle discriminations and what if everything just flips. Man’s World is as amusing as it is meaningful, both at the same time. P.S. if you aren’t up to speed to a spot where men equal women, this might get you a little offended.
