Kanulu Kanulanu Dhochaayante Review

Dubbing films used to mint money in the past in Tollywood but the times have been changed now.  No one is caring dubbed films. Stars like Vikram, Suriya are struggling to register minimum openings for their films.  When Superstar Rajini is unable to register decent openings with his films, there is no need to talk about other heroes. 'Kanulu Kanulanu Dochayante' is released amidst no expectations and without proper promotions.  'Pelli Choopulu' fame Ritu Varma is the heroine of this film.  Dulquer Salmaan who is known for films like 'OK Bangaram'.. 'Mahanati', is the hero.  The title of this movie is taken from Mani Ratnam super hit song Kanulu Kanulanu Dochayante form 'Donga Donga'.

Story:

App developer Siddharth(Dulquer Salmaan) and his friend Kaalis(Rakshan) who is an animator lives off by earning money through online frauds. Meera(Ritu Varma) is an orphan and she is a beautician. Siddhu is in love with Meera, Kaalis is in love with Shreya(Niranjani Ahathiyan).  Both the heroes don't reveal their true persona to their girlfriends.
They earn money through a scam to keep away from the police.  They plan to settle down in goa with their girlfriends. Pratap Simha(Goutham Menon) reaches Goa in search of them to solve the case.  There are several twists and turns in the process.  Whether the love stories of the lead actors ended on a happy note or not? Whether Pratap Simha is able to solve the case is the rest of the story.

Performance:

Telugu audiences are not much familiar with Dulquer but he is a proven actor in Malayalam.  Though he made an entry as a star kid, he has made a mark for himself.  This is not a memorable role for him but he is able to deliver a decent performance.  But this role requires a special spark, which seems to be missing in Dulquer. But he did justice to his role. We have to appreciate his efforts to dub his voice as well.  He scored more marks in dubbing than several native heroes in Tollywood.

Ritu Varma is a talented actress but she is not getting good offers.  There may be different reasons but she can deliver good performance if she is given a good character.  It is not right to compare her role with the role in 'Pelli Choopulu' but she went out of the regular heroine zone and she delivered a good performance. We can say that this is her second-best performance.

Hero friend Rakshan handled the comic part well. He provided the required relief with his one-liners. The scenes with his girlfriend are funny.  Director Goutham Menon has done a decent job with his villain role.  The character requires high intensity, so one may think that a senior actor would do justice to his role. Anish Kuruvilla has done a decent role.

Director:

The point chosen by Desing Periyasami is not new but we can say that its a good attempt. Several films are made with this theme in the past but this film scores brownies because love and crime elements are balanced well. The film starts off as a love story but the screenplay runs faster as soon as the audiences feel it is the routine flick.  From then onwards audience will be thrilled with the unexpected twists and turns.

The movie reminds us of Bollywood masterpiece 'Race' with its twits. Though we can't compare the making with Race, the thrills are good. Though some logics are missed, the audience will not take them seriously.  Even though they gave a powerful intro to the police officer, he is seen missing from action in the second half for quite some time. Audiences feel his absence.  On the other hand, the regular audience may feel this story as routine.  Hero's fraud and stealing crores of money just like a super brain is not that convincing.  But the director has covered up these things with an interesting screenplay.

Technical Department:

Harshavardhan Rameshwar has done a great job with his BGM. He made several scenes lively with his music.  In fact, his output covered made some of the routine scenes better. We can witness his talent once again in this film after 'Arjun Reddy'.

Masala Cafe provided the tunes for this film and they are pretty average.  K.M.Bhaskaran's cinematography is good. Praveen Antony editing is okay. But second-half should have trimmed some places to remove the lag. The production values are good.

Plus Points:

Dulquer, Rakshan performance
Ritu Varma character
Twists
BGM

Minus Points:

Songs
Twists which sans logic
Simple climax
Only six characters
Unrelated title

Final World:

Usually, villains involve in a crime but this film is a reverse. The lead actors are involved in crime and rob money from the villain. This attempt of the director is a decent one.  The audiences who like this genre will be satisfied but the regular audience may feel something is missing. Except for this, the movie impresses the audience.

In Simple Words:

Impressive love crime with thrills.
