It should be even to both states, says Jagan
Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy said that unless water is drawn at 800 feet from Srisailam, it is not possible to provide water to the parched Rayalaseema, Nellore and Prakasam districts.
Speaking at the Brainstorming of the (Our Governance and Your Suggestion), the Chief Minister said, while the upper riparian states are building project after project and increasing the height of dams.
If we are to get 44,000 cusecs of water to be drawn, the Srisialam level should reach over 881 feet. And at the 854 feet, there will be a drastic fall as what we can draw is only 7,000 cusecs. The reservoir level of 881 during the peak flood period would remain only for 10 days.
As the reservoir peak level would be only for 10 days in an year during heavy floods and at this rate when will the Pothireddypodu head regulator be filled and when will the water reach the arid region of Rayalaseema, Nellore and Prakasam districts, he asked.
As the upper riparian state of Telangana is drawing water at 800 feet, we are also following the same example to provide water to the arid areas of the State. When both the states are drawing water at the same level, it will be an equal opportunity for both. For hydel power generation, neighboring Telangana state starts pumping from 770 feet itself, he said.
All projects in the Telangana states are being held at 800 feet itself.
If we are to mitigate drought in the arid Rayalaseema region we have to draw water at 800 feet and it will an equal opportunity to both the states.
The issue of Pothireddypadu has come up while he was speaking irrigation in the state. In Water Resources Department we could save Rs 1,095 crore through Reverse Tendering. The Polavaram could be delayed due to Corona but efforts are on to complete it by 2021.
For the first time we have seen good rains and Prakasam barrage was also full. There are other irrigation projects which will be concentrating on including Vamsadhara, Nagaval. Veligonda I, Nellore Sangam barriages, Owk Tunnel, which will be completed this year and will be dedicated to nation, he said.
