For Jagan, his word is his sword
Chief Minister Y S Jaganmohan Reddy is a man of strong will. His decisions are strong and doesn’t like to go back on the word once uttered. There are several incidents where he sacrificed his career to stand by the word.
Quitting Lok Sabha and Congress on the promise that he had made to the people after his father late chief minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy’s death shows him how strong he stands for his word. He did not care for the mighty Congress leadership nor was attracted to the offers they have given him if he went back on his promise of Odarpu.
The subsequent issues including the CBI cases, ED attachments and finally the 16-month long jail period was all for his non-compromising politics. Even when he was jailed or denied bail for 16 months, he did not compromise and give up his word. He stood by his word and it was proved again and again.
Ever since his thumping victory in the 2019 general elections, the BJP at the Centre, which also had seen a similar victory in the Lok Sabha, had been trying to lure him every time. The BJP had offered him Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha immediately after the elections. He refused it. The BJP had offered him two berths in the Union cabinet. He refused it. The BJP had offered him the post of the Rajya Sabha deputy chairman early this September. He refused it. The BJP had offered him three berths in the cabinet this time. And he refused it.
His repeated refusal is on one ground – the fulfilment of the Special Category Status (SCS) to the state, as promised by the Central government at the time of the bifurcation in 2013 December. The SCS had been his core demand from the beginning and he stands for it, even when the top bosses including Prime Minister Narendra Modi tried to convince him to join the NDA and take three cabinet berths at the Centre.
Jaganmohan Reddy is understood to have told the Prime Minister to give Special Category Status to the State if he wanted the YSR Congress to join the NDA and take cabinet berths. Not many politicians would stand by their word, particularly in these days of opportunism. But, Jaganmohan Reddy proved himself a different leader who stands for the promise that he makes.
It is proved time and again that the word Jaganmohan Reddy spells is the sword he holds without compromising. It is a rare quality found and it is good to seen such leader getting popular mandate even in the days of opportunism in politics.
