AP, GMR Sign on B’puram airport MOU
The much waited Ghogapuram international green field airport works would be undertaken by the GMR airports limited. The airport is proposed at Bhogapuram mandal of Vizianagaram district. It falls on National highway-16 which connectrs Chennai-Kolkata. The proposed area is just 40 kilometers away from Vizag. The agreement between AP government and GMR airports was finalized in the presence of Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. Minister for Industries Goutham Reddy, APIIC Chairperson Roja and GMR Group’s chairman GBS Raju, AP Special Chief Secretary for Industries and Infrastructure KarikalValaven also were present in the ceremony.
The signing of the agreement follows a decision on March 4 by the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led state cabinet to grant permission to the GMR Group to proceed further with the development this Airport in a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode.
The GMR Group would be allotted 2,200 acres of land for the development of the green field airport. Another 500 acres of land also was kept aside for aviation related allied industries. The project however did not take off in close to six years and remained on paper as a mere proposal.
In August 2017, Airports Authority of India had earned the bid to develop the Bhogapuram airport but the then state government preferred GMR industries. Around 1650 acres of government land was allotted for the airport and rest of the land was acquired from farmers near by the kovvadapeta, Polipalli and Bhogapuram areas of Vizianagaram district. The compensation for own lands Rs.28 lakhs per acre and Rs.12 lakhs for D-pattas was disbursed.
